POST 7 - What's in the news?

WHAT'S IN THE NEWS?

To begin researching, I chose to specifically look at past movies that have successfully based their plot on true stories. These include: Hidden Figures (2016), 12 Years a Slave (2013), American Hustle (2013), Into the Wild (2007), Apollo 13 (1995) and many more. Each movie usually only include minimal amount of characters or a small amount of time or an historical time that is significant. However, as these are not short movies I have also looked at smaller, shorter, and more independent movies that have used the news to influence their stories which are shown on Youtube and Vimeo. It is also more common for short films to be made in to documentaries if they use current issues and affairs from the news.

The news article that I found could work for a film plot had been in the beginning of August, in the peak of the heat wave. After studying the short film 'The Fly', I thought that this article would fit a similar theme/ genre, in that people are prepared to kill others over a small annoyance. The story would begin on a sunny day, with an ice cream centralised on an empty street, when a stream of children run towards the sound of the ice cream van, once all are served a man runs around a corner holding a samurai. There would be a lot of exaggerated diagetic sounds, including the children and their parents screaming and the ice cream siren being set off, to alert others. In terms of mise-en-scene the opening shot would have the ice cream in the middle of a street and a slow zoom in, like a long establishing shot. I would likely also have no music, perhaps something suspenseful, however I think as a short movie it would be more successful if there is minimal to no music. As the screenshot shows, this event occurred during the day, and therefore this lighting
