3 ACT STRUCTURE
The three-act structure is a model used in narrative fiction that divides a story into three parts (acts), often called the Setup, the Confrontation and the Resolution, shown in the picture below. Even within the short films that I have studied it is clear that each stage is used to create successful outcomes.
As for example in the short movie 'Operator' , it is created to fit into the suspense genre, it is clear that the three act structure is used. In the beginning we are introduced to an operators room where emergency calls are taken, and because it is a short film we are quickly introduced to the rising action and the crisis of the film where there is a fire in a house, where it is obvious that the caller is panicking and is left with a young child, as she is panicking it is clear that the audience are likely to feel anxious also. As the film only shows one end of the call, this being the operator, it is unclear on how the women in distress is dealing with the situation. Act three of this short film is when the caller says the firefighters and the police have arrived, when the phone call is cut off. Because it is a short film the 3 act structure is shown quickly, however it is still used in most films.
